From November 3 to 7th, Argentine citizens from communities all over Argentina are gathering in Buenos Aires to carry out a demonstration and a fast, the “Protest and Fast for Life and Dignity Against Plunder and Contamination” against the transnational mining industry’s “Argentina Gold 2008” Conference. In every country throughout the Americas, people and ecosystems are threatened by transnational mega-mining projects, which destroy mountain and river systems, leaving contamination and poverty in their wake. Citizens assemblies throughout Argentina have come together to fight against these destructive mining projects. They are calling for international solidarity and support in their opposition.
We are asking for individuals and groups around the world to help by sending a short letter or email of support which will be read during the actions. Please include:

THE TOWNS AND PEOPLE OF ARGENTINA AFFECTED AND THREATENED BY CONTAMINATIVE, DROUGHT-CAUSING AND PLUNDERING MINING OPERATIONS ARE DEMONSTRATING OUR OPPOSITION AGAINST “ARGENTINA GOLD 2008”
The people, towns and ecosystems of Argentina are confronted by large-scale transnational mining operations, which are polluting, causing drought, and plundering our Andes and foothills. We are demonstrating against the mining corporation event “Argentina Gold 2008” which will take place on November 5-6 in a luxury hotel in Buenos Aires. (www.argentinaoro.com.ar) We called this action in a meeting of the Union of Citizens Assemblies (UAC) in Catamarca, Argentina in August 2008. Will you join us? A large tent will shelter the fasters and their supporters. We will show films contributed by the many citizens assemblies. Participants will carry out a four day fast consisting of organic fruit and pure water. A nutritionist will advise the fasters and help them prepare for their fast.
It is fundamental that everyone contributes materials for outreach, such as videos, pamphlets, banners, signs and all sorts of creative proposals which explain the social-ecological problems caused by the contaminative mega-mining operations, which pollutes, plunders and causes drought. We can all add support by participating, spreading the word among your friends, families, contacts. If you have contacts in the medias, papers, radios, TV, we ask you to spread the word about this protest. If you are going to fast, let us know soon so we can help you prepare.
